Since iOS 11, iPhone and iPad photos have been stored in HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) by default. HEIC keeps image quality high while using less space than JPG, which is why Apple adopted it. The downside is compatibility: HEIC depends on HEIF and HEVC support, and that support is still inconsistent outside Apple's ecosystem.
On many Windows PCs, HEIC files will not preview correctly unless extra codecs are installed. Some Android devices, Linux systems, and older macOS versions also struggle with the format. Upload a HEIC to an e-commerce dashboard, social scheduler, or older design workflow and you often hit an unsupported format error.
Converting to PNG removes those compatibility problems immediately. PNG is one of the most widely supported lossless image formats on the web and across design tools. Unlike converting to JPG, converting to PNG also avoids introducing another round of compression, so more detail is preserved.
For teams that work across devices, this single step matters more than most people expect. Slack contacts can't open HEIC, Notion attachments fail to render, legacy Confluence and Jira show blank previews, and email recipients bounce HEIC files because their reader doesn't recognise them. Batch-converting to PNG once means the same images render reliably whether you send them to Android colleagues, Windows desktops, or older content management systems.
The iCloud Photos sync workflow is where this gets really painful. iCloud stores originals in HEIC by default, and when you turn on “Download originals to this Mac/PC” or pull a shared album from icloud.com on a non-Apple machine, the .heic files land on disk with no codec to open them. People discover this the day they switch from a MacBook to a Windows laptop or hand off the family photo archive to a child on a Chromebook. Drop the whole DCIM dump onto this page, get a folder of PNGs back, and the photos are immediately viewable in Windows Photos, the Files app on Chromebook, Linux Eye of GNOME, Slack previews — anywhere a normal image is expected to work.
